These deliciously scented pencils are made from rolled sheets of newspaper instead of wood--you can even see the layers of newspaper when you sharpen them! Recycled newspaper is tightly rolled around #2 graphite then hardened so they feel like wood pencils, but are better for the environment. Be sure to look for Colored Smencils and Snifty Scented Pens, too!

Smensils- kids love them Jan 30, 2010
Kids were going crazy for these smensils. The were in heaven when received. Sturdy and nice smelling recycled pencils.
They should last all year. Love them.

I really like Smencils. They smell good & are recycled! Good for the Earth!! My favorite ones are Cotton Candy and Root Beer. Make sure you get those flavors. Go Smencils!

Not just the environment Jul 07, 2008
Yes, you are helping save the environment by purchasing pencils made out of recycled newspaper. However, I discovered that these pencils actually last longer than the cheap pencils do. As a homeschooling mom, I see first hand how different pencils write and sharpen. Before coming across smencils, I preferred Ticonderoga Black or the Mirado Black Warrior. Those were pricier than regular papermate pencils, but lasted longer. After buying a smencil at Books-A-Million, I was hooked. My kids are required to use the cap erasers on all pencils instead of the ones they come with. They put their pencils back in their boxes at the end of the day, too. If they do not lose their pencil, they can use one smecil for about 4-5 months before I toss it out. The metal eraser holder gives out before the pencil does. Smencils sharpen beautifully and have a nice dark lead. They also erase cleanly. I have cleaned out my pencil cups and given away all of my old pencils. A ten pack will last us all year. I can't say the same for the cheap pencils.
