America's amusement park history began in 1875 on Coney Island. The first rides were carousels, but in 1884, the first gravity switch back train was introduced -- the first true roller coaster in America. In 1902, the first under friction coaster was introduced and, in 1959, Disney introduced the first tubular steel coaster and the exciting features we've come to expect in coasters -- loops, corkscrews and stability. Technology, working with the laws of physics, continues to push what is possible in ride design.
