My secret garden Jan 09, 2009

For about five years now, I've worked as an archives assistant for a manufacturing concern that produces the plastic bags hot dog buns come in. My office, if you could call it that, is a stool in the secondary sub-basement where we keep paper copies of transactions, consumer complaints, recall orders, what have you, in rows and rows of filing cabinets, so many that two years ago we had to replace the old, fixed ones with newer ones that roll up against each other so that only one aisle is available at a time.
You wouldn't believe how busy I get around the Fourth of July and Labor Day! Also, ninety-nine percent of our consumer complaints have something to do with hot dogs coming in packages of ten while buns only come in eights. We mail a standard form letter in response informing the concerned party that, while we understand their concerns, we only make the bags the buns come in, and we knew absolutely nothing about the hot dogs themselves. A couple of years ago, thinking outside the box, I suggested that we keep one master copy of this form letter at the front of the appropriate filing cabinet instead of filing photocopies for each and every of the thousands of such letters we mail out yearly. My suggestion did make it upstairs to a meeting agenda, but that meeting happened to coincide with a fire drill, so I dutifully soldier on with my filing.
For most of my time, I have used standard manila file folders, which actually look slightly greenish under the fluorescent lights. Then something marvelous happened: my supervisor, who handles all of the ordering for my department, one Solomon Bandaranaike, returned to his native Sri Lanka for vacation. While there, he contracted dengue fever and was unable to return to the States for a few months. That's not the wonderful part, of course; Solomon's a pretty good guy and lets me take an extra smoking break every day.
But it just so happened that he was away when it was time for us to place our yearly materials order, so it fell on me to step up to the plate and take care of it for him. I was understandably nervous, and intended to closely follow his order from the previous year. I must have pressed a wrong key, though, because when it came time to confirm my order, I discovered I had somehow selected these wonderful Helena Designer File Folders instead. I was about to correct my mistake--but something stopped me. I thought, "Why not?" I looked around carefully to make sure no one else was in the sub-basement, and then, heart pounding, confirmed the order.
Now, when I wheel the cabinets apart and open the drawers, here and there in the manila expanse are splashes of color. I think of it as my secret garden, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. In fact, many days, even with Solomon back, I often fore-go my extra cigarette break and keep on planting "flowers."

i love these files so much that i've tried as much as possible not to use them. They're very study and brighten up the home office. They're complimented very nicely by the woodgrain folders. A nice addition to the workaholics cache of files

These are unique folders, perfect for special projects. The material is more glossy and stiff, so any bends will show easily. I really like them regardless.

My office is very bland, but this really brightens up my desk, and makes it much more appealing to be around. Makes my little corner of the world much more bright.
